I've been in the locker room. Because I coached it.
I've spent almost 30 years on the sideline: a 33-0 season, only to have the state championship canceled by COVID. High school Final Fours. College Final Fours. National championships. And coaching the first program ever to win 2,000 games.
Those runs were influenced by talent, for sure. But they're remembered for the toughness of the players who made the plays. That realization led me to advocate for coaching the mind: building the belief that we can design our thinking, and find alignment between our beliefs and our behaviors.

Architecture
Performance isn't an accident. You architect it. Cognitecture is the system I've used to build 33-0 seasons and Final Four programs: the daily discipline, the identity work, and the toughness reps that decide who shows up when the pressure is on.
The Discipline Day
The daily mental reps nobody sees, that decide the moments everybody does. A standard, not a mood.
Identity Before Performance
Before you build toughness, you have to know who you are. Who you are decides how you compete.
Toughness Is Trained
Mental toughness isn't a personality trait. It's a skill you build, or don't. Your mind quits before your body does. Train accordingly.
What changes when an athlete, a team, or a program actually trains the mind?
Coach Mays has made one of the greatest impacts on my life, not just as a player, but as a mentor. He saw potential in me that even I couldn't see. He is so well positioned to mentor others in this space. Mental Performance fits him perfectly.
Coach Mays has helped implement our Mission, Vision, and Standards of Behavior for our basketball program. We are learning above-the-line behaviors daily. His biggest influence has probably been enabling our players to take more of an active leadership role within our program. #PlayerLed not #CoachFed
I missed an entire season due to not one injury, but three. The last two came right before I was to get cleared to play. His mindset conditioning has allowed me to start my day with a routine that reinforces who I am and who I am becoming. I focus on being faithful to doing the little things well, a lot. He has helped me the most in teaching me how to reframe adversity. 'The setback is the setup for the comeback!'
Coach Mays has worked with me through trials and troubles. He has allowed me to focus better on staying in the moment while working as an accountant in a high-stress environment with deadlines and pressure. I now hold my thoughts and focus captive, and I don't let them hold me captive. He has also been a big help with my personal diet and nutrition, and with creating standards for myself in my personal life.
The Locker Room
Perspective.
From the sideline to the boardroom, the message doesn't change: you coach people first, always. I bring the room the mindset that builds champions, and the conviction to go do something with it.
